Footloose, Except BDSM Instead Of Dancing, AU

Random headcanons/AUs that won’t get fics anytime soon. If anyone wants to add on/chime in/create something, feel free.

Smith moves post high school graduation, escaping from the bustle and stress of his life in the city to go to community college in a tiny Midwest town. It’s nice- nobody to tell him what to do, or where to go- and he likes having the independence and security that comes from a tightly knit community. Problem is, no one talks about their status here- no one talks about BDSM. It’s exactly the opposite of his city lifestyle- being loudly out and talkative about the things he does behind closed doors- and the decisions he makes while he’s living there throws the narrow-minded town into turmoil.

cw: xenophobia, discrimination, bullying, beating, fighting. mentions of kink, bruises.
If I need to tag something, let me know.

BDSM is a normal part of everyday life- people openly identify as a dom, sub, switch, etc. The big cities are much more progressive on this, but the smaller towns, not so much.

The city council of the town Smith moves to has banned any material on BDSM. There aren’t any books. They control the media sold in stores and projected on tv. Some people will riot if they think kink things are going on in town- but not all are hateful about it. Most just don’t understand, don’t want to understand, and refuse to discuss it.
“People don’t do that here…”
“Why not?”
“They just…don’t. It’s private. We don’t talk about it.”
“Doesn’t mean they don’t do it.”
The best of people would be appalled at any brutality shown against others in the lifestyle. You may not like it or understand it, but that doesn’t mean you beat up people for it.

Ross, as the “we don’t talk about that here” awkward, side-eyeing “but I’ve thought about it” guy. First one to befriend Smith, and the only one to sort of stick up for him.

Smith meets Ross first in one of his classes. They hang out, become quick friends, and the chemistry between them naturally develops into flirting. Smith makes it known he’d like to do kink stuff with him, but this is where Ross hesitates. Explains how the town is. How he doesn’t know much about kink…though he’s really interested in learning. How they have to keep things secret, and can’t let others know if they do stuff together.
But Smith, being loud and out and voracious about learning everything he can, goes around asking questions, openly talking about things, and- unfortunately- making people uncomfortable and angry. This attracts the bad attention of other guys in his classes, who are intent on letting Smith know he should keep his mouth shut.

“There used to be a kink club here, but the council closed it down. Everyone there got thrown out and arrested. A lot of the people who used to live here and went to school here moved away to escape the oppression.”
“So why are you still around?”
Ross smiles sadly. “My sister. My parents live in town. Things aren’t great with them. Every extra dime I make, I give to her, so maybe she can go to a better college than the one here.”

It’s when Smith gets into a fight with some other guys that he meets Trott. Trott, who’s taken a fair share of self defense classes. He and Smith strike up a tentative friendship after Trott takes out the bullies, and they bond over fast food shared between them in their community college’s library. Editing each other’s essays; giving advice on presentations.

Trott doesn’t trust people in the scene- because he got beaten up before, in the guise of it being “kinky.” People caught him leaving a BDSM club when he was 18, and beat him up outside of it. He was only curious, and was only there to learn and not to scene, but it didn’t matter.

Smith and Ross sceneing, in the privacy and comfort of Smith’s apartment. Slowly teaching Ross bits about domming. Smith wearing bruises proudly on his skin when he goes to class, and getting side-eyes from classmates.

Ross gets in trouble for hanging out with Smith. “That city trash is trouble.” Ross and his dad, who’s on the city council, get into an argument eventually. Ross gets thrown out of his house and ends up at Smith’s doorstep.
Smith can’t visit Trott, either.
“People will get suspicious if they see you here.” (at Trott’s apartment)
“Why is the entire town against me?”
“You’re different. People don’t like that. People don’t like it when you go against what’s suspected of you.”

Smith trying to teach Trott that whatever he learned BDSM was like, it’s not true. Wanting to show him it doesn’t have to be what people stereotypically think it is. That people should care about your well-being before you even get into things.
“And if you don’t believe me…well…I guess you could watch.”
“Watch?”
“Yeah. Ross and I.”
Trott blinked owlishly back at him. “Watch you scene?”
“Yeah, why not?”
“I…”
“Let me guess- another thing you people don’t do here?”
Trott says nothing, shocked into silence at the offer.
